Sue Kim, M.D., M.S.
Dr. Kim completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago and received her medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Following residency training in internal medicine at Brown University, she settled in the Bay Area, completing a fellowship in Hematology at Stanford University Hospital and Clinics, during which time she also obtained a Master of Science in Epidemiology.
It was during her fellowship years here in the bay area when Sue revived an interest in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She completed a program in medical acupuncture through UCLA and also took coursework in TCM locally. Due to this growing interest in more holistic approaches, she opted to return to Internal Medicine, which would complement this interest. While working for Kaiser Hospitals and Clinics, she became an active member (and liaison) of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) committee and worked to establish guidelines, agendas, and goals and for all of Northern California Kaiser.
She also gave talks to physicians and health care providers at her location on various topics, such as nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and CAM and cancer, presenting her colleagues with handouts and resources. She also brought CAM to her patients, performing acupuncture when appropriate and adding recommendations on lifestyle and nutrition and various health conditions.
Following her time at Kaiser, Sue worked at an integrative general practice in San Francisco, providing her patients with more holistic care, including acupuncture, discussions on lifestyle management, as well as nutrition/herbs/supplements; in addition she worked closely together with her fellow physicians, naturopathic doctors, acupuncturists, and a holistic nutritionist to help optimize her patients' health. During this time, she was accepted into and began a remote fellowship program with the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, headed by Dr. Andrew Weil.
Due to an unquenchable interest and captivation with acupuncture and integrative medicine, Sue has transitioned her practice to focus on these modalities. In addition to participating in the Integrative Medicine Fellowship, Sue has also been accepted into the 5 Branches University for TCM and plans to complete her studies in TCM on a part-time basis.
