Myofascial* Trigger Point Therapy
Fascia is a web of connective tissue that connects muscles, organs, and skeletal structures; it is located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bone.
Trigger points are hyper-irritable spots or "knots" within the muscle that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers, often caused by sports and other injuries as well as stress, inflammation, trauma, and/or poor posture. Myofascial trigger point therapy is utilized to relieve pain and dysfunction arising out of these knots.
At Heshmat Pain Management Clinic, we use the Electro-acuscope to break up trigger points and decrease inflammation, eliminating the referred pain. We also use fleurimethane to stretch and "cool" the muscle further breaking up adhesion, "untie the knots" releasing the bonds between fascia, integument, muscles, and bones. The fibers then reorganize, allowing the body to regain flexibility and function. We then recommend individually prescribed stretching exercises.

The term myofascial was used by Janet G. Travell, M.D. in the 1940s referring to musculoskeletal pain syndromes and trigger points. In 1976 Dr. Travell began using the term "Myofascial Trigger Point" and in 1983 published the famous reference "Myofascial Pain & Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual".
