All You Need To Know About Orthotics

Do you experience foot or heel pain and are thinking of buying orthotics to help ease the pain?  Before buying one, read our blog to know more about what orthotics is and how you can effectively use it.

An orthotic is a special shoe or heel insert custom-made to support the abnormal movement of feet and to treat leg, foot, or back problems. Orthotics help correct structural foot problems, including flat arches and foot and leg pain. Orthotics can be custom-made to fit the unique shape of the patient's feet to provide support, cushioning, and comfort to the wearer.

The common types of shoe inserts are as follows:

  • Arch supports: They are designed to support the foot's natural arch.
  • Insoles: They are made of foam, gel, or plastic and slide inside the shoe to provide extra support.
  • Heel liners/heel cups: They are manufactured to provide extra cushioning in the heel region.

Benefits of Orthotics

Orthotic manufacturers make their products to offer these benefits:

  • To provide cushion and comfort: These orthotics are made of memory foam to add additional comfort compared to the insoles in the shoes.
  • To support the foot's abnormal movement: An abnormality in your foot can lead to foot pain. Wearing orthotics made of sturdier material helps promote proper foot alignment and movement and provides support and stability to keep your foot in place.

What Conditions Do Orthotics Treat?

Orthotics can treat several medical conditions; examples include the following:

  • Arthritis: Orthotics can help correct discomfort and poor positioning caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
  • Back pain: Orthotics can treat pain caused by poor positioning of the feet due to the arches that roll inward or lack of cushioning.
  • Bunions: Orthotics can reduce pressure on the big toe and prevent bunions, the painful bumps that occur at the big toe's base.
  • Bursitis: The swelling or inflammation of a bursa sac is called  Bursitis. Orthotics that offer good arch support can reduce bursitis pain.
  • Diabetes: Diabetes may lead to the loss of sensation in the feet. Orthotics can reduce too much pressure on the feet that can result in foot ulcers.
  • Flat feet: If you experience flat feet, it can lead to pain in the foot, ankle, and back. Orthotics help relieve this pain by providing support to the feet and promoting proper foot positioning.
  • Heel spurs: Heel spurs occur when excess bone grows on the bottom or back of the heel. Orthotics help support the foot and decrease inflammation.
  • Injuries: Orthotics provide extra support to people who've experienced trauma to their feet and ankles during the healing process.
  • Plantar fasciitis: If you have heel pain resulting from plantar fasciitis, orthotics can help provide support to the heel and foot.

Orthotics can be used as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan to help relieve foot and ankle concerns. Call Heshmat Pain Management Clinic, Palo Alto, CA, 94306  at (650) 470-0008 to know more about orthotics and their use.
